Why have a website if I already have Instagram?

Social media doesn't replace a site of your own. What a website gives you that Instagram or WhatsApp can't, and when it's worth having one.
"Instagram is enough for me"
It's one of the things we hear most, and it makes sense: Instagram is free, you already have followers and customers message you on WhatsApp. Why pay for a website?
Social media works, and it works well. But you don't own it, and that changes everything.
What a website gives you that social media doesn't
It's yours
Your Instagram account depends on another company's rules. If it gets suspended, hacked, or the algorithm changes and you stop showing up, you lose that channel overnight. A website on your own domain (yourbusiness.com) is an asset you control.
People find you on Google
Instagram barely shows up when someone searches "accountant in Chicago" or "party tableware rental." A well-built website does. And people searching on Google have a specific need: they're closer to buying than someone scrolling a feed. (We explain this in what is SEO).
It builds trust
When someone doesn't know you, the first thing they do is look you up. A clean website with your services, past work, contact details and your own domain shows you're a serious business. For business-to-business (B2B) sales, it's practically a must.
It keeps information organized
On Instagram, prices, terms and FAQs get buried between posts. On a website they're always easy to find, and they save you from answering the same question twenty times a day.
It sells while you sleep
With an online store or a booking system, customers can buy or book at any hour, without waiting for you to reply to a message.
You own your data
You know how many people visit, where they come from, which pages they look at and what they're searching for. That helps you make better decisions than whatever metrics a social network chooses to show you.
Social media and websites don't compete: they work together
The best strategy uses both:
- Social media to get seen, build a community and stay visible.
- A website as your home base: where every path leads and where customers make their decision.
- A Google profile for local searches.
- WhatsApp to close the sale.
Every post can point to your website, and your website can take people to WhatsApp in one click.
When is a website worth it?
Almost always, but especially if:
- your customers look you up on Google before buying;
- you sell to businesses or to customers who compare several options;
- you spend all day repeating the same answers about prices, hours or terms;
- you want to sell online or take bookings without a middleman;
- you rely on a single social network to get customers.
So how much does it cost?
It depends on what you need: a single page to introduce your business isn't the same as a store with hundreds of products. What matters is that it's fast, looks good on a phone and is built so Google can understand it. A beautiful website nobody can find is no use.
